arhiivu, or the archive I am compiling of the futures karjalazet (Karelians) & those of Karelian descent dream

On constructing a future archive

During the Winter and Continuation Wars of the mid-twentieth century, much of Karelian archives were destroyed through the Finnish and Soviet armies’ “scorched earth” policies. Homes, chapels, forests — all were burnt to the ground.

To build toward a future of abundant archives of karjalažus, or ways of being Karelian, the interviews I conducted in 2024 and 2025 for my dissertation project, “Kuule, myö tiä olemmo” (Listen, we are here), are made publicly accessible here.

Researchers may use this archive for projects that produce and promote karjalazet futures. Citation information is provided on each interviewee’s page.
